With power gone and internet connection gone due to Hudhud cyclone in Vizag, I have nothing else to do except to read book with whatever little natural light nature was allowing. I sat down reading Half Girlfriend by Chetan Bhagat more curious to know what this, newly coined, term by the author actually means. I almost read half of the book when the word Half Girlfriend appeared in the book.
So what does Half Girlfriend exactly means. Well, if a girl hangs around with a boy and allow only hugs and no other physical contacts then she is your half girlfriend. Well what an awkward definition for the controversial term which earned a lot of flak on social media site, of course provided free marketing for the book as well. Going by this definition I think half of my friends who are men will be my half boyfriend. Yuck! I think I can do without this term in my vocabulary.
Reading Half Girlfriend kept giving me a feeling that it is a continuation of Aarti and Gopal’s story which has reached its culmination point in Half Girlfriend in a different avatar. Aarti and Gopal are now in the shoes of Madhav and Riya in the fiction Half Girlfriend. Their story is very similar to Madhav and Riya while one want relationship other is just happy with friendship. The only difference in the story of Madhav and Riya of Half Girlfriend is that they have a happy ending.
Overall story line is very predictable with only one decent and worth twist for which you can read the whole book. Otherwise the book is very averagely written. In other words Chetan Bhagat is yet to produce another scintillating book like 2 States. I think and many others as well, 2 States is the best work of Cheatn Bhagat so far. It is yet another book written by Chetan Bhagat with Bollywood kept in mind.
There is an unfair balance between narrative and dialogue. At times narrative is very weak and insufficient and dialogues are too mediocre and not engrossing at all. Just regular girl and boy conversation. Nothing interesting.
With Half Girlfriend, Chetan Bhagat has raised the question of over obsession of Indians for the English language. If one cannot speak fluent English then that person is look upon to someone of off standards and down market. Something is true as well. You go any where in India, knowledge of English is a must. Right from the admission of children to getting jobs or marriage, having respect in the eyes of kids, carving a place in high society and many similar situation. But the book doesn’t give any revolutionary approach.
The Verdict:
Read Half Girlfriend if you have no other option like me. If you are a fan of Chetan Bhagat’s writing. If you love to loathe Chetan Bhagat. Otherwise there is no reason to read it.
