man booker prize 2014

The shortlist for the prestigious Man Booker Prize 2014 has bee announced. The nomination are as follows

To Rise Again at a Decent Hour by Joshua Ferris
The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan
We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler
J by Howard Jacobson
The Lives of Others by Neel Mukherjee
How to be Both by Ali Smith

Among the nominees Neel Mukherjee is of Indian origin. The Lives of Others is his second novel is about a sprawling Indian family saga set in the West Bengal of the late 1960s. 

A similar book The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri was also shortlisted for the prize. Jhumpa is also of Indian origin and her book was also set in the backdrop of Naxal movement in West Bengal.

Last year Man Booker Prize 2013 winner was The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton. It was a mammoth novel of 800+ pages about Walter Moody who arrives in New Zealand to try his luck but fortune has something more drastic stored for him. It is a mysterious novel which won everyone kept readers glued to it in spite of the size. 

The winner will be announced on Tuesday 14th October 2014.
