Oh I was smiling all the while reading letters of the unsatisfied and complaining crayons and seeing the color filling of the child named Duncan, with my little kid, he was giggling. I’m still smiling while writing the review of this picture book The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt.
It is a thin book of 40 pages but left me nostalgia when I was reading for my kid and it left him wondering, what if his crayons also quit one day. He has thoroughly enjoyed reading and re-reading the book. And I think any kid who loves coloring and playing with colors will find it very interesting as well.
It is an ideal book for the kids age 2 to 3 but I seriously feel anyone can enjoy the innocence and simplicity of the book.
The letters are written in very simple and easy to understand language and drawings are too good. Any kid could relate to it. All the Crayons has written letters in their very own color. So when you see the book from side it looks like a rainbow.
The book also helps to create an understanding for colors. Like Brown and Beige are not the same lighter and darker shade of color. Sun could be both yellow and orange color. Black is for outlines but could be used more intelligently. Similar is for white as well. Coloring neat and tidily and many other.
Verdict: It is a fantastic book and hats off to Drew Daywalt, the author and Oliver Jeffers, the Illustrator of the book for such great creativity in simplicity. A quite original idea for anthropomorphizing inanimate objects and making them come to life and thrill the young ones at the same time as told by one of the mother.
I’ll suggest don’t buy a kindle version of it. Hardcover is certainly more enjoyable.
